Old things, historic things, smelly dirty things, all the things that were considered the very opposite of “contemporary,” have suddenly irrupted forcefully into architecture and art, blurring their boundaries. This book takes stock of the emerging generation behind this turn, and examines their experimental engagements with the preservation of culturally charged objects. Structured around a series of interdisciplinary dialogues among practitioners and thinkers, and illustrated with recent projects, the book provides a window into the unfolding intellectual frameworks, aesthetic modes, cultural ambitions, and political commitments that are the basis of experimental preservation.

"In the 1960s, a group of Los Angeles artists fashioned a body of work that has come to be known as the "LA Look" or West Coast Minimalism. Its distinct aesthetic is characterized by clean lines, simple shapes, and pristine reflective or translucent surfaces, and often by the use of bright, seductive colors. This volume, the first to provide a detailed study of the role of materials and processes in the advent of these truly indigenous Los Angeles art forms, focuses on four pioneering artists whose approach, often borrowed from other industries, featured the use of synthetic paints and resins as well as industrial processes to create objects that are both painting and sculpture. The author uses the methods of technical art history to inform her investigation of conservation issues associated with their work, thereby illuminating challenges facing the conservation of contemporary art in general"--Back cover.

The central panel of the Ghent Altarpiece is sumptuously decorated with plants and flowers. Visitors are struck by the diversity and realism, with which the Van Eyck brothers painted this flora and fauna. But the artists did not limit themselves to the unity of time and space. Spring flowers can be seen alongside summer plants, while Mediterranean flowers are combined with plants that can only grow in northern Europe. You will not only see roses, but also daisies and violets blossoming in the soft grass. Do these flowers and plants also have a symbolic meaning? Where did the Van Eyck brothers pick up this knowledge of botany? Exactly which kinds of flowers and plants are depicted and what purpose did they serve in the days of the Van Eycks? Some light will be shed on this and other questions in this catalogue to the temporary exhibition. Exhibition: Caermersklooster Provincial Cultural Centre, Ghent, Belgium (15.04.-25.09.2016).
